Hawaii's Wood Carves a Niche

Agriculture Hawaii
January-March 2000
by Andrea Gill

What a great way to commemorate the year 2000 — inaugurating a new magazine which celebrates the many "Grown in Hawaii" products which make the Islands special. Forestry is proud to be part of Agriculture Hawaii.

The Hawaii Forest Industry Association just completed its 10th year as a nonprofit corporation. Representing forestry professionals, woodworkers, sawyers, retailers, landowners and others, the association envisions healthy and productive forests throughout Hawaii.

The industry's activities range from legislative advocacy and research to professional training. Projects include restoring a native dryland forest and mentoring high school woodworking students. The annual HFIA Wood Show — one of the association's main events — emphasizes the use of wood conserving techniques and highlights the beauty of the many tropical hardwoods that can be sustainably grown in the Islands.
